The primary purpose of The Building Codes is: "to provide the minimum standards to safeguard life, limb health, property and the public welfare by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, and location and maintenance of all buildings within this jurisdiction..."

International Code Council
Since 1927, the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) has revised the Uniform Codes every three years. Over the past few years, ICBO has consolidated with the other two major code writing organizations in the United States to form the International Code Council (ICC).
