The Building Codes

Code History

The primary purpose of The Building Codes is: "to provide the minimum standards to safeguard life, limb health, property and the public welfare by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, and location and maintenance of all buildings within this jurisdiction..."

Building Codes are neither frivolous nor arbitrary. The evolution of Building Codes has, throughout history, stemmed from tragedy and disaster. Through the ages we have learned from disasters such as:

  • Eruptions at Pompeii
  • Great London Fire following the plagues in both the Dark and Middle Ages
  • Hurricane Hugo
  • Mt. St. Helens
  • Northridge earthquake
  • San Francisco earthquake and fire

Building Codes are updated and revised every three years to reflect the information learned and changes in technology.

International Code Council

Since 1927, the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) has revised the Uniform Codes every three years. Over the past few years, ICBO has consolidated with the other two major code writing organizations in the United States to form the International Code Council (ICC). The ICC publishes the International Codes including:

  • Building
  • Fire
  • Fuel gas codes
  • Mechanical
  • Plumbing
  • Residential
