Water
Conservation Tips
Think of how many ways we use water.
Whether it’s used for drinking, bathing, cooking or
cleaning, water is essential to us every day.
Water conservation has many advantages.
When you conserve water you save money, energy and
help protect the environment. Here are some ways you
can save water.

|
|
In the bathroom
- Consider
installing a low-flow toilet.
- Repair
leaks. You can test whether your toilet is leaking
by adding food coloring to the tank water and waiting
15 minutes. If you see color in the bowl, there
is probably a leak.
- Don’t
let water run while you brush your teeth.
- Fill
the sink with water when you wash or shave your
face.
- Install
a low-flow shower head, flow restrictor, or cut-off
valve.
- Repair
leaks and drips from your shower promptly.
In
the kitchen
- Install
an aerator or flow restrictor on the sink faucet.
- Use
the sink garbage disposal sparingly. Use a garbage
can or compost pile instead.
- Soak
pots and pans before washing. Use a minimum amount
of dish soap.
- Run
the dishwasher only when it is full and avoid extra
cycles.
- Thaw
frozen food in your refrigerator or microwave, not
under running water.
In
the laundry room
- Match
the water level to the load size. If you don’t have
a selector, run only full loads.
- Check
faucets and hose connections for leaks.

|
Around
the home
- Use
a pail or basin instead of running water while
cleaning.
- Use
a sponge mop instead of a string mop. They
use less water for mopping and take less water
to keep clean.
|
 |
|
|
Lawn
and garden
- Use
a hose nozzle that can be shut off or spray
adjusted.
- Consider
an automatic sprinkler or drip irrigation
system.
- Water
slowly and thoroughly during cool windless
hours. Water as little as possible.
- Use
a broom or rake to remove leaves and clippings.
Don’t hose into the street.

Remember,
water leaks anywhere in your home are costing
you money. Check your water meter at night after
all water use has ended and check it again first
thing in the morning before water use has begun.
If there is a difference in the reading, you
have a leak. Investigate by checking pipes and
connections around your home. Have all leaks
repaired promptly.
