A Message from the City Council of Daly City

To the Members of our Daly City Community,

First, we would like to thank the community for their support in approving Proposition 1A, a constitution amendment to keep local taxes for local services, and one of the proposed tax measures, Measure "N", an increase in our business license tax. This tax measure is estimated to bring in about $1.6 million a year, beginning next fiscal year, to help pay for operations. Although not enough to fill even half of the almost 50 vacancies, it will assist in maintaining services at a somewhat reduced level than previously. We will make every effort to stretch those dollars to provide needed services.

We have much to be grateful for living in this area of our great country. Our temperature and weather are fairly constant year round. We do not have to endure the radical harshness of the changing seasons as some sections of the country do. We have access to the wonders of the Pacific Ocean on our city's border and the Sierra Nevada Mountains within several hours of us.

In addition we have many wonderful opportunities for our own self-enrichment not only in the Bay Area but here in Daly City. Our own Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of self-improvement and exercise programs to satisfy the minds, bodies, and spirits of all of our citizens.

Examples of these programs include: Digital Photography, Tai Chi, Foreign Languages, Athletic Leagues, Living Trusts, Russian Cooking, Learning to Play Musical Instruments, Aquatics Classes, Trips to the Four Corners of the Earth, Hip Hop Dance, Belly Dancing, A Variety of Personal Computing Classes, Quilting, Drop in After School Programs, and Winter Camps. These are just a few of the offerings you will see within the pages of this booklet.

As we journey through the Holidays and Winter 2005 we ask that driver safety stay in the forefront of your minds. Early evenings are among the most dangerous times for pedestrians due to earlier sunsets, which make it more difficult to see them. In addition drinking alcoholic beverages at Holiday Parties can cause horrible consequences. The old advice of: "If you drink, don't drive" is especially important over the holiday season. Have a designated driver.

In terms of continued community improvements, this past fall we completed a new Fire Station #92 located at Bepler and Mission Streets. In addition, the Thornton Beach Vista Project at the intersection of John Daly and Skyline Boulevards has been completed is now open and offers some incredible views of the Pacific Ocean.

In closing, we would like to wish you and yours a happy holiday season and a safe and joyous New Year!

ARE YOU BEING INVADED?

Close encounters of the crawly kind

You aren't the only one who likes to come in out of the rain. You may have noticed some 6-legged visitors doing the same thing. But don't grab that pesticide spray can to solve the problem. There are safer ways to combat ant invaders.

· Keep things clean. Empty the trash daily during the ant season.

· Keep food in containers that seal tightly.

· Kill ants you find walking around the kitchen. These are scouts that will call in the hordes if they find a tasty tidbit.

· Caulk cracks and crevices in baseboards, cupboards, walls, etc.

· Wipe up ant trails with soapy water or vacuum them up. Ants will die in the dust of the vacuum bag.

· Use ant baits when ants invade. Remove the bait when the trail disappears so you don't attract more ants.

For more information on using ant baits, and tips for controlling ants outside your home and in the garden, call the Daly City Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program at 650-991-8208 or
