Daly
City – In an effort to reduce collisions
and make City streets safer, Daly City will
begin its new red light camera enforcement program
on March 10th,2008 at 11:59 p.m. Cameras and
sensors will monitor the city’s highest-risk
intersection approaches – starting with the
intersection of San Pedro Road at Junipero Serra
Blvd.
The program is seen as an important step to
improve traffic safety. Red light running is
one of the major causes of crashes, death, and
injuries at signalized intersections. Most recent
crash statistics show that nearly 1,000 Americans
were killed and 176,000 were injured in 2003
due to red light running related crashes.
The City of Daly City is giving drivers a 30-day
grace period before actual citations are issued.
Drivers who are in violation will receive a
courtesy notice informing them that they violated
section 21453a C.V.C. Red Light. It will also
explain that beginning April 10th, 2008, actual
citations will be sent to violators, who will
then be responsible for paying the fine listed
on the citation.
Chief
Gary S. McLane said, “We expect the Red Light
Camera Enforcement Program to have a major positive
impact on traffic safety in our city. We will
be strict but fair in the way we administer
the program, insuring that violations are properly
validated per legally accepted guidelines. This
will be a great tool to further our already
significant traffic safety efforts."
Daly City’s red light camera enforcement program
will be administered by Redflex Traffic Systems,
Inc., an Arizona-based provider of traffic safety
photo enforcement. Redflex is contracted to
provide similar successful programs in Arizona,
California, Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio and
Oregon.
