Daly
City, California – In conjunction with
the American Public Works Association (APWA)
and departments around the country, Daly City
will recognize those who work to provide and
maintain public facilities and services during
National Public Works Week, May 21-27, 2006.
The theme for this year is Public Works: The
Heart of Every Community. Activities and programs
scheduled for the week will highlight the contributions
of public works professionals on behalf of the
community.
“Our
objective is designed to increase public awareness
of their contributions as well as to enlighten
the public about the duties, practices, and
goals of public works professionals,” reports
the American Public Works Association, sponsor
of National Public Works Week. “The week seeks
to enhance the prestige of the often unsung
heroes of our society – the professionals who
serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.”
Public
Works professionals include those who manage
the roads, sidewalks, storm drains, traffic
signals, streetlights, city buildings, playground
equipment, fencing, signs, and capital improvements.
They are, in short, the people who maintain
and improve the systems and services that support
a healthy, safe, and comfortable community.
The
Northern California Chapter of the APWA hosted
its Annual Awards Ceremony in Berkeley on May
18. Daly City was honored with awards for two
of its projects, Fire Station 92 on Bepler Street,
and the Bayshore Community Center. Local activities
scheduled for National Public Works Week include
the presentation of both the National Public
Works Week Proclamation and Certificate of Achievement
for Public Works Employee of the Year at the
City Council Meeting of May 22. The Daly City
Public Works Department will present an Equipment
Show and Tell at Marjorie H. Tobias Elementary
School, 725 Southgate Avenue, at 10:30 a.m.
on Tuesday, May 23. Other activities for the
week include an employee recognition event.
