Daly City – Marchbank
Clubhouse will surely be transformed this Saturday,
October 8th by a day rich in culture, featuring
ethnic music and dance, storytelling, facepainting,
games and food from Latin America. Commencing
with this event, Daly City joins the nation
in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month.
From 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 10 South Parkview
Drive (adjacent to Pacific Plaza), local performers
and dance troupes will entertain attendees from
across the Bay Area. Chevy’s Restaurant of South
San Francisco is also preparing to delight Mexican
food enthusiasts for a cost of only $1 per item.
“Daly City takes great pride in honoring
the Hispanic community, especially those who
live and work in our City. Daly City benefits
from the diversity of our residents, and this
Saturday, we celebrate the contributions of
our Latino citizens,” remarked Mayor Carol L.
Klatt.
Initiated
by the U.S. Congress more than 20 years ago,
the original Hispanic Heritage Week was expanded
to one month in 1989. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, more than 30 million Americans
– about 1 in 8 – are of Hispanic origin, the
fastest growing segment of our population. Hispanic
Americans today are identified by the region
they, or their ancestors, came from including
Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, or the nations
of Central or South America. Hispanics comprise
about 14.1 percent of the population of the
San Francisco Bay Area.
“The
City Council joins cities nationwide in giving
tribute to those who have instilled the values
and traditions of all Latinos in the American
experience,” remarked Councilmember Sal Torres,
Daly City’s first Latino elected official born
to immigrant parents from Peru, who will open
the day’s ceremonies.
Marchbank
Clubhouse’s indoor and outdoor venue is an ideal
setting for this event. It is adjacent to Daly
City’s Pacific Plaza, a popular destination
with its 20-theater cinema, restaurants and
ample parking. The festivity is open to the
public, and its location is convenient for fun-seekers
from the Bay Area. The facility is located within
walking distance from Daly City BART and is
close to Interstate 280.
