Daly
City – Families are getting ready for back-to-school
and this fall children and young adults will
want to head back-to-the-library, too. Daly
City students from 4th grade to 12th grade and
college introduction level can visit any Daly
City Public Library branch to get free help
from qualified tutors. Daly City Public Library
now offers Live Homework Help, an online tutoring
service from Tutor.com that connects students
to expert tutors in math, science, social studies
and English via the Internet. Spanish-speaking
tutors are available in math and science. In
the 2003/2004 school year, over 250,000 students
used Live Homework Help at public libraries
across the country.
This
free service allows students to come to the
Serramonte Main Library, Westlake, John Daly
or Bayshore branch libraries (call the library
for open hours) beginning at 1:00 p.m. to receive
homework help from a live tutor via the Internet
using a library computer. Live Homework Help
is easy to use. Children and young adults can
use designated computer terminals and enter
their grade level and the subject they need
help in. Students are connected to a tutor in
an Online Classroom immediately. Children and
young adults can also use this service from
home or school or when the library is closed.
Kids simply point their browser to research.dalycitylibrary.org,
click on the “live homework help” link and connect
to a tutor. The service is available in English
from 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. everyday and in Spanish
Sunday through Thursday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Students
and tutors can review specific homework questions,
as well as subject-specific concepts using features
such as controlled chat, an interactive white
board and shared
Web browsing in the Online Classroom. Tutors
and students can type math equations using a
special math tool, share educational Web sites
and much more for a rewarding learning experience.
All tutors are certified teachers, college professors,
professional tutors or graduate school students
from across the country. They love to teach
and share their knowledge online.
“We
are thrilled to be able to provide this very
valuable service to Daly City students,” said
Library Director Carol Simmons. She explained
that this service has been provided to the Daly
City Library with Library Services and Technology
Act (LSTA) funding through a partnership with
the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System.
“We will be promoting this program through Daly
City schools, at the four library facilities,
online at our website (www.dalycitylibrary.org)
and via the City’s television channel. It is
our hope that Daly City students will take full
advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”
