National Asian Pacific American
Heritage Month Gets The Spotlight in Daly City on
May 18
|
 |
Daly
City – The city hall rotunda in Daly City
will serve as the center stage for various Asian entertainment
as the community celebrates National Asian – Pacific
American Heritage Month on Wednesday, May 18. From
noon to 1:30 p.m., a colorful and eclectic mix of
ethnic dances and cultural performances – from “Tinikling”
(Philippines’ national dance) to Chinese lion dances
and hula – is expected to draw the lunchtime crowd
to 333 – 90th Street in Daly City.
“If an hour of enchantment is your cup of tea, then
join us at City Hall on May 18. Expect the entertainment
to wow you, the food to satisfy you, and the Daly
City crowd to welcome you,” commented Mayor Carol
L. Klatt.
Along with entertainment will be a sundry of information
booths by local agencies and businesses. Starbucks
Coffee of Westlake will provide free hot tea. The
Office of Speaker Pro Tem Leland Yee will give away
Asian snacks. L & L Hawaiian Barbecue, a local
eatery, will offer a special combination plate for
only $5 (includes a soda drink).
A joint congressional resolution in 1978 initially
established Asian / Pacific American Heritage Week.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the first 10
days of May were chosen to coincide with two important
anniversaries: the arrival in the United States of
the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the
completion of the transcontinental railroad (May 10,
1869). In 1992, Congress expanded the 10-day observance
to a month-long celebration. www.census.gov
On May 3, 2005, President George W. Bush proclaimed
May as Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month. The
theme for 2005 is “Liberty and Freedom for All.”
This year’s celebration marks the second year of participation
for Daly City, home to one of the largest Asian-Pacific
American community in the United States. For more

Department – Cultural Arts Office at (650) 991-8190.
