Daly City Library Presents
‘Everyday Heroes’ Program
Schoolchildren To Hear Stories
About Courage
|
 |
| Daly
City – City librarians have lined up
several speakers who will talk about true-to-life
tales of courage at the Daly City Library’s “Everyday
Heroes” program from 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday,
April 14, at the Gellert Clubhouse. Schoolchildren
from elementary through high school will be reading
excerpts from pre-selected books.
The program is funded by a “We The People” grant
from the National Endowment for the Humanities
to award three sets of books for children and
young adults. The collection is about courageous
behaviors and lives, and includes titles such
as To Kill A Mockingbird, Sylvester and the
Magic Pebble, My Side of the Mountain, Little
House on the Prairie, Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, The Hobbit
and Profiles of Courage.
“The experience promises to be a lively and engaging
one, especially for the children,” noted Mayor
Carol L. Klatt.
Several members of the community have been invited
to give oral testaments – about five minutes long
– on courage, either from a personal experience
or witnessed. Confirmed participants to date include
Mayor Klatt, Councilmember Sal Torres, Junipero
Serra Elementary School third grade students Chandni
Suri and Orange Richardson, fifth grader Zackary
Montalbano and School Principal Terry Garvin,
Deputy Fire Chief Don Ciucci of the Daly City
Fire Department and Lt. Eric Wollman of the Daly
City Police Department.
The event is open to the public. The Gellert Clubhouse
is located at 50 Wembley Drive. For more information,
contact the Youth Services Librarian at (650)
991-8244.
