DALY CITY TO RECEIVE STATE GRANT
FOR HIGHWAY 35 PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
NEAR WESTMOOR HIGH SCHOOL

Daly City – Daly City will receive a $189,000 grant from the State of California’s “Safe Routes to School” program to improve pedestrian crossing at the intersection on Highway 35 and Westmoor Avenue. The winning grant application, submitted by the City of Daly City’s Public Works Department in consultation with the Jefferson Unified High School District and CalTrans, proposed major realignment of the currently uncontrolled right turn northbound lanes on Highway 35.

“This intersection is particularly hazardous due to the poor line of sight visibility and frequent foggy conditions in the area,” remarked D. Peter Gleichenhaus, Director of Public Works. “Public safety issues take on an even higher priority because of the large number of pedestrians, including school children, who cross the highway under these poor conditions,” he added.

The existing intersection allows pedestrians to cross the “free” flowing right-turn lanes. Planned improvements will require vehicles exiting the highway to make a full stop before turning right on Westmoor Avenue. The project is expected to be completed next year.

The State of California’s “Safe Routes To School” program is managed by CalTrans. Approximately $22.7 million grant funds were awarded on October 2004 to 97 local agency projects throughout the state, out of the 385 applications submitted. Daly City was the sole awardee from San Mateo County.
