250 DALY CITY VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Daly City – For the sixth consecutive year in Daly City, volunteers – about 250 in all – will take part in Make A Difference Day by completing worthwhile projects citywide this Saturday, October 23rd. Rain or shine, numerous volunteer groups are expected to be at City Hall, starting at 8 a.m., for a morning rally aimed at jumpstarting the day’s activities with city officials.

“Make A Difference Day in Daly City has become a community event that engages neighborhoods, schools, religious and service groups to be productive – in one day. It is a wonderful way to introduce our youth to community service. It connects our residents in unique ways and circumstance. Above all, what our volunteers accomplish in one Saturday benefit the whole community. For their collective efforts, we are truly grateful,” remarked Mayor Sal Torres.
Make A Difference Day projects in Daly City this year include cleanup of neighborhoods, business districts, schools, parks and major thoroughfares. Many local congregations such as the Church of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Korean Central Presbyterian Church (KCPC) and DeMolay are participating. Students from Westmoor, Jefferson and Mercy high schools, Holy Angels Church’s CCD Class, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Hilldale School and Our Lady of Mercy School have pre-registered. Daly City’s Public Works Department, and Parks and Recreation Department will coordinate the cleanup projects.

To promote child safety, the Daly City Police Department, assisted by the Daly City Police Explorers, will provide free child identification records, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Serramonte Center. To support this effort, the Daly City Host Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Daly City – Colma will partner to provide DNA kits for children, at no cost. Families may view a video on child safety while waiting to receive these services.

Additionally, the Daly City Fire Department will coordinate a door-to-door public education and safety campaign targeting 1,000 apartment dwellers in the Clarinada and Serramonte area. These residents will also receive information about first-time homeownership from the City of Daly City’s Economic and Community Development (ECD) department.
At Westlake Library, the Daly City Public Library will host a Halloween Storytime Fest for children, with teen volunteers.

The Anti-Graffiti Committee, assisted by student volunteers, will paint over problem sites throughout the city.

Hilldale School and Daly City’s Council of Homeowners and Residents Association (COHRA) will also embark on their own individual projects.

Daly City’s event partners in years past will once again be involved in Make A Difference Day. They include BFI, Caltrans, the City and County of San Francisco, Bay Area Rapid Transit, Pacific Gas & Electric, and the San Francisco Golf Club.

Billed as the nation’s largest day of volunteering, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by the USA Weekend Magazine, in conjunction with the Points of Light Foundation.
