City – A day rich in culture, featuring
ethnic music and dance, storytelling, art, games
and food from the Latin Americas, will surely
transform Marchbank Clubhouse this Saturday, October
9th, as Daly City joins the nation in celebrating
the National Hispanic Heritage Month. From 11:30
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 10 South Parkview Drive (adjacent
to Pacific Plaza), local performers and dance
troupes will entertain attendees from the Bay
Area. Several vendors, including Chevy’s Restaurant
of South San Francisco and local restaurants,
are preparing to delight Mexican food enthusiasts.
“Daly City takes great pride in honoring the Hispanic
community, especially those who live and work
in our City. The City Council joins cities nationwide
in giving tribute to those who have instilled
the values and traditions of all Latinos in the
American experience. Daly City benefits from the
diversity of our residents, and this Saturday,
we celebrate and enjoy the contributions of our
Latino neighbors,” remarked Mayor Sal Torres,
Daly City’s first Latino elected official born
to immigrant parents from Peru, who will open
the day’s ceremonies.
Initiated by the U.S. Congress more than 20 years
ago, the original Hispanic Heritage Week has grown
and expanded to a month in 1989. More than 30
million Americans – about 1 in 8 people in the
United States – are of Hispanic origin, according
to the U.S. Census Bureau, and are the fastest
growing segment of the population in America.
Hispanic Americans today are identified according
to the region they, or their ancestors, came from
including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, or
the nations of Central or South America. Hispanics
comprise about 14.1 percent of the San Francisco
Bay Area population.
Marchbank Clubhouse’s indoor-outdoor venue is
an ideal setting for this event. It is adjacent
to Daly City’s Pacific Plaza, a popular destination
with its 20-theater cinema, restaurants and ample
parking. The festivity is open to the public,
and its location is convenient for fun-seekers
from the Bay Area. The facility is located within
walking distance from BART’s John Daly Boulevard
station, and close to Interstate 280.
