Bay Area Crime Stoppers

The Daly City Police Department is a part of Bay Area Crime Stoppers.

What is Crime Stoppers? Crime Stoppers began in Albuquerque, New Mexico in September, 1976. Today there are more than 300 Crime Stopper organizations in the United States and over 1,400 worldwide. Bay Area Crime Stoppers, an affiliate of Crime Stoppers USA, is a partnership between the community, the media and more than 100 law enforcement jurisdictions committed to combatting crime and increasing public safety throughout the nine Bay Area counties.

Because Crime Stoppers keeps the tips completely anonymous, ordinary citizens are empowered to provide information on criminal activity in their local communities and are even eligible to receive cash rewards of up to $2,000.

Crime Stoppers aims to engage and empower local residents in a safe, effective way by giving them the opportunity to provide information without having to speak directly to the police or law enforcement agencies, without revealing their identity or having to testify in court. There is also an opportunity to earn a reward if the information they provide leads to an arrest and charges are filed.

How the program works:

· When calling a tip to 800-222-TIPS or texting a tip to CRIMES, the Tip Provider is given a special “Tip Code” number for the purpose of assuring anonymity (no names are asked, no phone numbers are recorded).

· The Tip Provider is then instructed to call back to the call center for status updates to see if the tip has led to an arrest or charges filed.

· If the Tip Provider learns that an arrest has been made and charges have been filed, he/she will be instructed by the Call Center to go to any local Bay Area Mechanics Bank branch office to claim the reward.

· The Tip Provider will need to provide the Tip Code number to the Mechanics Bank representative, who will immediately confirm the Tip Code status with bay Area Crime Stoppers. Upon confirmation, the Mechanics Bank representative will issue the cash reward to the Tip Provider, with no questions asked and no name/address information necessary. The Tip Provider remains completely anonymous!
