DALY CITY SELECTS NEW CHIEF OF POLICE

Daly City – City Manager Patricia Martel announced today that longtime public safety leader, Manuel Martinez, Jr., has been selected as Daly City’s new Chief of Police. Martinez’ selection follows a rigorous recruitment effort to fill the vacant position.

“Manny Martinez is an outstanding addition to the City’s professional management staff,” said City Manager Patricia Martel. “His background in public safety is impressive. He brings over 27 years of law enforcement experience to the job of Police Chief and has a track record of outstanding performance.”

Martinez is leaving the post of Police Captain, held since 2004, for the City of San Jose. He served as one of several Captains in a law enforcement agency that supports a diverse community of more than 1,000,000 residents. Captain Martinez has provided leadership and enthusiasm focused on fulfilling the primary mission of creating safe places to live, work and recreate via community partnerships.

His previous assignments have placed him in a variety of roles including Patrol Division Commander, Bureau of Investigations Division Commander and Airport Patrol Division Commander. As a Lieutenant, Martinez served as Unit Commander for The Bureau of Investigations, Homicide and Juvenile/Missing Person Units, Area Patrol Commander and Patrol Commander for The Bureau of Field Operations (Field Training Officer Program). Prior leadership roles as a Sergeant included SWAT, Narcotic Covert Investigations, and Robbery Unit/FBI Violent Crimes Gang Task Force.

Captain Martinez received a Juris Doctor degree from Lincoln Law School, San Jose, CA in 2004; and a Bachelor of Arts in Management in 1999 from Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session #198 (1999); and has many years of professional development under his belt. In addition, he has received many awards and letters of commendation for outstanding accomplishments in the line of duty and is a recipient of the prestigious Medal of Valor Award from the San Jose Police Department (1996).

Our City organization welcomes Manny Martinez to the City of Daly City and I look forward to him assuming his new duties as Chief of Police on November 23, 2009.
