Volunteers Needed

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Count January 30, 2007

On January 30-31, the County of San Mateo Human Services Agency will conduct its biennial One Day Homeless Count. The count is a federal requirement which is also a key component of the County's ten-year plan to end homelessness, and will provide us with an increased understanding of both the number of homeless and their individual and collective needs.

The primary count will occur between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM on January 30 with supplementary activities to be conducted on January 31.

The County is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the street count by serving as Street Count Workers in Daly City. The Workers are responsible for surveying their assigned area in Daly City and accurately tallying the number of homeless individuals and family units that they observe on the streets, in vehicles, or in makeshift shelters (such as tents or tarps). Please see the attached job description. The Street Count Workers will be organized in teams of two persons.

Street Count Workers will be required to attend a 1.5 hour training. Both day and evening training sessions will be scheduled at various locations throughout the county. Training session dates, times, locations to follow soon.

If you are able to volunteer, please contact Tish Birkby at the Center on Homelessness, tbirkby@smchsa.org or (650) 802-7656, and let her know you will be volunteering in Daly City. You may also call Lenelle Suliguin at City Hall, lsuliguin@dalycity.org or (650)991-8256.

Please join us in this important and exciting work.
