LOCAL WOMEN FETED AT 2ND ANNUAL DALY CITY NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION & AWARDS EVENT

Daly City
– Over 180 women and supporters gathered to celebrate women from all walks of life at the 2nd Annual National Women’s History Month Celebration and Awards Event at the newly opened Bayshore Community Center. Veronica Grace Alegre Flores, Westmoor High School Student Body President; Estella Cicilo, president of the Midway Village Resident’s Association; Doris M. Thomasson, supervisor of the Maintenance Division for the City of Daly City, and Julia Padreddii, Italian Catholic Federation and Holy Angels Church volunteer were selected as the most outstanding Women of the Year.

Councilmember Carol L. Klatt and Award Nomination Committee Chair Pat Bohm announced this year’s four awardees and 17 nominees in four categories: Young Woman of Promise, Women of Excellence, Unsung Hero, and Honorary Historical Award. Cicilo and Thomasson were co-winners of the Unsung Hero award.

Daly City Parks and Recreation Commissioners Leah Berlanga and Denise Kelly assisted in the presentations. KRON-4 News anchor Wendy Tokuda served as the keynote speaker. The theme of this year’s women’s history month event was, “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams – Changing The Landscape of America”.

Carol Simmons, Daly City’s Library Director, offered a few historic tidbits relative to women’s history, and recommended two books, Who Cooked the Last Supper by Rosalind Miles and On Beauty by Zadie Smith. Both books are available for loan from the library.

“The increase in the number of participants for the second year of this special event for women in Daly City confirms that this is something that the community values,” said Leslie Peay-Heckman, the event coordinator. “It far surpassed the outcomes projected,” she added.
