Winning Art Entry by Young Library Patron Currently on Exhibit at Serramonte Library

Daly City -- Mayor ADRIENNE TISSIER (third from left) was at Serramonte Library last week to personally congratulate first place art winner MAYA SOMMER (middle). Maya’s entry, entitled “Keep the Rainforest Alive”, won first place in the K-5th grade category in this year’s “Growing Up Asian in America” contest. It is currently on exhibit this month at Serramonte Library in Daly City.

Also on hand to view the artwork were (from left) Vaughn Jones, president of the Daly City Library Board of Trustees; Christofer Sommer and Janti Sommer, Maya’s parents; Arlene Fife, principal of Our Lady of Mercy School; and Denise Kelly, president of Friends of the Daly City Library.

Maya is nine years old, a 3rd grader at Our Lady of Mercy School, and a loyal patron of the Westlake Library. Her winning entry can also be viewed online at: http://www.asianpacificfund.org/awards/guaa/entry.php?id=25

“Growing up Asian in America” was created in 1995 as a Bay Area forum to celebrate national Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. It has become a signature program of the Asian Pacific Fund. The Daly City Library has been an active supporter of the annual event since its inception, and has showcased previous winning entries. Sommer is Daly City’s only first-place winner to date.
