Local Event Part of Statewide 'California Stories' Project

Daly City – Jane Hammons, writer and former recipient of the University of California at Berkeley's Distinguished Teaching Award, will be the featured guest speaker at the Friends of the Daly City Library's annual luncheon fundraiser on Saturday, October 5th.

Hammons will give a one-hour presentation on The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck's classic novel. The lecture and book discussion will begin at 1:00 p.m., and is free of charge.

The event is also a celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Steinbeck's birth year. Steinbeck, one of America's greatest novelists, was born on February 26, 1902 in Salinas. This program is part of the statewide "California Stories" project to promote the reading and discussion of Steinbeck's classic literary works, which include Cannery Row, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. It is funded by the California Council for the Humanities, in partnership with the California Center for the Book.

"Daly City is fortunate to have an eminent scholar like Ms. Hammons present our first The Grapes of Wrath program. This fundraiser is quite popular with library supporters, because in addition to a wonderful lunch, there is much food for thought gained by all from the literary presentation that follows," stated Assistant Library Director Carol Simmons.

The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 920 Stonegate Drive (off Hillside Blvd.), in South San Francisco. Proceeds will benefit the four branch libraries in Daly City. To purchase a lunch ticket (at $25 each), contact the Friends President at (650) 755-9567, or via email at dclibraryfriends@aol.com
