City's New Public Works Director

Daly City -- D. Peter Gleichenhaus, former Deputy Commander at the Presidio of San Francisco, has been appointed Public Works Director of Daly City following an extended regional search, City Manager John C. Martin announced today. The San Francisco resident will assume his new post on January 22nd.

Gleichenhaus will manage Daly City's Public Works Department, which has an annual operating budget of over $6 million. He will also oversee an expanded capital improvement program totalling nearly $60 million over the next five years that includes the City's aggressive Public Facility Improvement Program of constructing and renovating community centers and libraries throughout Daly City. He will supervise the activities of about 100 employees with responsibilities for Building Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Engineering and Construction, and Street Maintenance.

During Gleichenhaus' five-year tenure at the Presidio, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility that housed 1,500 families, 4,500 soldiers and civilian workers, with an annual budget of $47 million.

"Peter Gleichenhaus is a results-oriented manager with strong leadership skills and strategic planning background. His reputation as an excellent administrator, with substantial experience working with diverse, community-related projects, suits Daly City's short and long term goals," Martin noted.

Gleichenhaus attended Cornell University, and earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in General Engineering at the United States Military Academy. He has a Master's of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Upon retirement from the United States Army, Gleichenhaus entered the private sector, managing a medical organization comprised of 55 physicians and 10 clinics in Northern California. He was also the Dean of Education at Heald College - School of Business, and most recently, Director of Administration for CellNet Data Systems, a high-technology company.

Since 1997, Gleichenhaus has been a member of the San Francisco State University - College of Business Advisory Board. Previous professional affiliations and interests included Board Chairman of the Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties, and Board Director of the Bay Area Council - Boys Scouts of America.

"In Daly City, Mr. Gleichenhaus will utilize his expansive experience in the military, corporate, academic and non-profits sectors. His unique understanding of these divergent fields, along with his expertise in staff operations and a keen sense of fiscal management, will enhance the City's management team," said Mayor Michael P. Guingona.
