Daly City to Celebrate the Life of Former Mayor William J. Schumacher

Former Daly City Mayor William J. “Bill” Schumacher passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at his home in Palm Springs.  He will be remembered at a Celebration of Life event scheduled for Friday, November 22 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 333 90th Street, Daly City.  Schumacher elected to the City Council on March 12, 1974 and served as Daly City’s Mayor in 1978.

Schumacher joined the Daly City Police Department in 1959.  He resigned from the department on March 31, 1966 with the rank of sergeant.  He began his political career as a School Board Trustee with the Jefferson Elementary School District, a position he held from December 1968 to January 1972.

His public service career shifted to the City of Daly City when he was elected to the City Council on March 12, 1974 by what was then the highest vote totaled amassed by any candidate.  Schumacher was appointed Mayor of Daly City on March 14, 1978.  He continued to serve on the City Council until his resignation December 2, 1980.

His election to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors prompted his resignation from the City Council.  When he was elected to the five-member Board of Supervisors in 1980, he became the first resident of Daly City to serve on the Board in 40 years. He served through 1992.
