Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal, Sat., March 12, 8:30am-12:15pm

Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes unused portions of chemical products used at home in your kitchen, bathroom, garage, car, or yard including household cleaning products, paints, paint thinners, used motor oil and oil filters, batteries, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. These products are often labeled as toxic, poison, combustible, corrosive, flammable or irritant. And, our homes are full of them!

HHW is too toxic to place in the regular garbage bin. HHW can easily pass through treatment processes or storm drains, or seep out of disposal facilities into waterways. Eventually, these chemicals end up in the San Francisco Bay or the Pacific Ocean. It is illegal to dispose of HHW in the garbage, sewers, or storm drains due to threats to health and safety.

Daly City residents can safely dispose of HHW free of charge at special drop-off collection events on the following Saturdays in 2016:

  • March 12
  • June 11
  • September 10
  • December 10

The collection events take place from 8:30 am to 12:15 pm. To participate, residents must schedule an appointment at San Mateo County's HHW Program: www.smchealth.org/hhw or by calling (650) 363-4718, select option 3.

Accepted items include acids/bases, aerosol cans, automotive supplies (car batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid), cleaning products, fertilizers, pesticides, flammable liquids, fluorescent lights (compact and tubes), paint, inks, and photo chemicals. No radioactive, explosive, medical or commercial waste is allowed. All waste collected is reused, recycled, or stabilized for proper disposal to achieve zero waste being landfilled.

Choose safer alternatives for these products whenever you can. The EPA’s “Safer Choice” label is a good indicator of less toxic products. Or, make your own cleaning products! There are many recipes online, visit: http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/features/best-nontoxic-ways-to-clean-home
