Daly City Mourns the Loss of a Republic Services Driver

The Daly City community is mourning the loss of a valued worker with Republic Services, the City’s franchised garbage and recycling company. On Wednesday, January 16, 2019, a Republic Services truck driver died in an accident while on duty along his route in Daly City in the early morning. The accident occurred on Skyline Drive.

The City expresses its deep sadness for the driver, Mauricio Garcia Oropeza, and offers condolences to his family and his coworkers at Republic Services. Mr. Oropeza was a seasoned driver for Republic Services and a member of the Teamsters Local 350 for 17 years. His two brothers are drivers for the same division in Daly City. His father also worked for Allied Waste Services (now Republic Services). Mr. Oropeza was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and was a resident of South San Francisco. He leaves behind his wife and four children. He was 58 years old and passed away one day before his 59th birthday.

Mr. Oropeza was a longtime employee and was loved by all. Crisis counselors were on site at the Republic Services offices to assist staff with the grieving process.

“This loss is such a tragedy for the Daly City community. We are keeping Mr. Oropeza, his family and his wider family at Republic Services in our thoughts,” said Daly City Mayor Ray Buenaventura. There is a memorial fund set up to accept donations for Mr. Oropeza's family:
