City Council Selects Carol Klatt as Mayor, Sal Torres as Vice Mayor

Daisy Li Named Citizen of the Year

The City Council selected Carol L. Klatt to serve her fifth term as Mayor at its annual reorganization meeting on December 6, 2010.  She served as Mayor for the first time in 1996, and was selected again in 2000, 2004, and 2007.  Mayor Klatt succeeds outgoing Mayor Michael Guingona, who will continue to serve on the City Council.  The City Council chose Sal Torres to serve as Vice Mayor for the coming year.  Klatt, Guingona, and Gomez were re-elected to their respective seats on the City Council in the November General Election.

“It is an honor to serve as the Mayor of Daly City,” Klatt said. “I am especially honored to serve as Mayor during our centennial year.”

Prior to the reorganization of the City Council, outgoing Mayor Guingona announced his selection for Citizen of the Year.  Guingona named Daisy Li, the owner of Moonstar Restaurant in Daly City, Citizen of the Year in recognition of her philanthropic work during the past year.  Li serves on the Board of Directors of the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce, where she has earned a reputation as a dedicated, energetic volunteer.  Daisy also volunteered as a member of the Daly City Census 2010 Complete Count Committee, working to assist the City and the US Census Bureau in promoting participation in the Census – especially in the Chinese community.  Li’s restaurant, Moonstar, was the first Daly City business to participate in Allied Waste’s organics (food) composting program, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to the environment.

In the days following the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Li organized a benefit for Catholic Relief Services at her restaurant and donated more than $20,000 grossed at the one-day fund raiser for the benefit of earthquake victims.

Outgoing Mayor Guingona adjourned the 49th City Council of Daly City and the 50th City Council was convened.  Daly City’s first City Council was elected in 1911.  The coming year marks Daly City’s centennial, having incorporated on March 22, 1911.
